Do You Need a Deep Cleaning?

What exactly is a deep cleaning? Every company has their own definition, so it gets confusing very quickly. Are you going to pull out my oven and scrub behind it? Some companies, maybe. Sunrise Maids? No. What we consider a deep cleaning is a house that has really gotten away from you. You try to find time to clean but honestly don't know where to get started.

When you're considering a deep cleaning vs regular cleaning, there are several ways to think about it, and not just "I can see dirt." Sometimes a child or a pet can track in mud on a rainy day and that doesn't necessarily mean you need a deep cleaning. A deep cleaning is sometimes defined more by a feeling than by an actual measurable metric.

Ask yourself this: if someone said they wanted to drop by right now, what would you say? "Sure, come on in!" or "Umm, can you give me a day?"

Or would you say, "How about I just come to your place?"

If your answer is the latter, you're in prime deep cleaning territory.

Signs Your Home Needs a Deep Cleaning

There are physical markers too.

Signs your home needs a deep cleaning: buildup on bathroom surfaces
Hard water buildup and a fogged shower are classic signs it's time.

Toilet bowls with a hard black ring in them (or worse).

Shower glass that is completely fogged over with buildup.

Thick dust on baseboards that does not easily wipe off with a finger.

Turning a ceiling fan on high creates a dust storm you want no part of, so the fan stays off or only on low with an occasional clump that gets jettisoned to the floor or whatever is nearby.

If any of this sounds familiar, you are overdue for a top to bottom cleaning. A one-time deep clean is the perfect starting point to get your home back in order.

Think of it as an investment in your home and your own mental health. The stress that lifts after getting your home professionally cleaned when it has been neglected for that long really has no words to describe it.

From Deep Clean to Easy Maintenance

Once your home gets back to a nice, clean baseline, maintaining it is easy. That is the hard part though: actually maintaining it.

We provide reasonable maintenance plans that allow us to service your home weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly if you just need that little reset each month.

If you are in need of deep cleaning services or aren't sure where you stand, you can text or give us a call and we would love to help you figure out the right service level and get on track to living in a home that actually feels like home again.

How Deep Cleaning Differs from Recurring Service

Deep cleaning vs recurring cleaning: the difference in intensity
Same finish line, very different starting points.

Exactly how different is deep cleaning vs recurring cleaning? Well, the finish line looks the same: a pristine, sparkling home. The difference is where your starting line is. If a recurring cleaning is the 100m dash, a deep cleaning is the 400m hurdles. You're further back on the track with a lot of obstacles between you and the finish.

Recurring cleaning can only happen after a solid baseline has been established. Recurring cleanings are maintenance. A deep cleaning is a complete makeover, or a hard reset. It would be the difference between fixing a scratch on your car vs stripping it down and getting an entirely new paint job. I think you get the picture.

With all this in mind, it is impossible to go straight into recurring cleaning from a home that has been severely neglected. You have to get a deep cleaning first.

So what's actually different about the work itself? During a recurring clean, we're maintaining a home that's already in good shape. We move through our 49-Point Checklist efficiently because the buildup between visits is minimal. During a deep clean, every surface gets extra time and attention. We're scrubbing, degreasing, and restoring rather than simply wiping and maintaining. The checklist is the same. The intensity is not.

Why Deep Cleaning Costs More (and Where the Money Goes)

What does all this mean? Time.

If you have a 2,300 sqft home that typically takes about 5 labor hours to maintain, it would probably take closer to 10 to get a proper deep cleaning performed. The additional attention to detail and scrubbing slows down the number of square feet per hour we can actually clean. There's no hidden formula here. It is all based on time, and as we all know, you can't fool time.

The seemingly high cost of a deep clean all boils down to time and labor. Our teams work just as hard on a recurring cleaning as they do on a deep cleaning. The difference is a deep cleaning simply takes more time.

One last example before I put this subject to bed. Think of the last time you bought a new car or had your car professionally detailed inside and out. The first few weeks of keeping it pristine were easy. Just run it through the car wash and that fresh coat of wax made it look good as new. Wipe down the interior with an Armor All wipe. Takes two minutes.

Until that dust, hair, and particulates start invading the little cracks and crevices all over your car. Road gunk and brake dust and Houston pollen start permanently affixing itself to the outside of your ride. A quick car wash or wipe down no longer solves the underlying issue: neglect.

Someone wasn't there giving your car the professional detail it needed to keep all of the unnoticeable areas clean. Until they become noticeable.

And what's the only way to get your car back to its pristine condition? Yep, you guessed it: time.

When You Should Book a Deep Cleaning

Many of our customers call and ask when specifically they should book a deep cleaning. It's an excellent question with not always a clear answer.

Haven't had a professional cleaning in 6 months or more? It's probably time.

Just hosted a large party and your guests got everything a bit more soiled than you liked?

Home recently renovated and there is construction dust everywhere?

Moving out and now that your furniture is gone you can see all the areas that need extra attention before you hand off your residence to the next tenant or homeowner?

Allergy season and you need to get all the dust, dander, and pollen out of your home?

If it's time for your annual spring cleaning in Houston, what better place to start than a full reset?

Does your home just not feel like home anymore and you wish it were... fresh? Sometimes the intangibles are all you need to cue you in that it's probably time for a deep clean.

Do you see dust, pet hair, or cobwebs in corners of your home? Those are sure signs you're either due or overdue for a deep cleaning.

If this is your first time hiring a professional cleaning service, we would strongly recommend a deep clean.

Why You Shouldn't Downgrade to a Standard Clean

Some people think, well, my house isn't that bad. I should just get a standard clean. And some of those people are right. We are happy to come out and perform a standard cleaning.

But we have a designated number of budget hours we can allocate to each cleaning and it is, unfortunately, tied to dollars. If your home honestly needs 10 labor hours to get it to the finish line but you only pay for 7, you're going to be about 3 hours short of a pristine home.

Don't get me wrong, it's going to look about 70% better than it did. But we can't promise our 100% Clean Guarantee if you don't purchase 100% of the necessary hours to allow us to get you there.

Our team already cleans in 6th gear, and there isn't a 7th. We can only do the best we can with what is paid for.

We've been cleaning homes for quite a while now and we have our formulas dialed in. We know pretty much exactly how long it will take to clean your home as long as you are honest with us about the condition.

If your home has been neglected and you order a standard clean and refuse a deep clean, just know we did the absolute best we could with the time we were allotted.

Use our Start Here tool to figure out exactly where your home is so we know what it will take to get your house where it needs to be. Home again.

What Is Included in Our Deep Cleaning Service

So what does a deep cleaning include when Sunrise Maids gets to your home? This is by far the easiest question so far. We utilize our 49-Point Checklist for all of our recurring cleanings, one-time standard cleans, and deep cleans alike. The checklist doesn't change. It just takes us longer on a deep clean because there is more dust, more dirt, more scrubbing, and more sweat.

Here's what that looks like room by room.

Kitchen Deep Cleaning

Kitchen deep cleaning: degreasing stovetop and range hood
A citrus degreaser cuts through built-up grime on stovetops and hoods.

For a kitchen deep clean, we start high and work our way down. We dust the top of your cabinets and begin making our way to the lower surfaces. When was the last time you thought about the top of your refrigerator? We think about it every day, so that never gets missed.

We move on down to your countertops and move every appliance, every container, and cutting board to get under, around, and behind everything. If you have stone countertops, we use a specialized product to protect and shine your beautiful surfaces. Anything that is on your counter gets wiped down as well.

Stovetops and range hoods can be particularly greasy sometimes, but that's never an issue. We use a nice citrus degreaser to cut through the grime and get your appliances looking as new as possible. Backsplash does not get missed or neglected either. It gets a degrease spraydown as well as thorough wiping and scrubbing where necessary.

All stainless sinks, appliances, fixtures, and surfaces get a coat of our stainless steel shine and protector. Guaranteed to look amazing when we are done.

All flooring, whether it's wood, tile, luxury vinyl plank, linoleum, or concrete, will get swept, vacuumed, and mopped thoroughly to ensure when we leave there are no footprints behind. Only shiny surfaces and pleasant smells.

Bathroom Deep Cleaning

Bathroom deep cleaning: scrubbing tile grout and restoring shower glass
Hair, dirt and grime are prime indicatiors that a deep cleaning can make your house feel like home again.

Ah yes, the bane of everyone's existence when it comes to cleaning and upkeep: the dreaded but unavoidable bathroom. No matter how clean you are, no matter how little you try to utilize your bath space, there is one thing that is inevitable. It's going to get dirty. That's the nature of bathrooms.

As always, we start high and work our way down to the floors. Vents do not get missed. Shower glass goes from frosty to crystal clear. Hard water deposits are no match for Sunrise Maids.

We wipe down your mirrors, dust your light fixtures, wipe down all countertops, and attack your toilet from all angles: top, front, back, sides, around, and behind. Thorough is one way to put it. Another way to put it is immaculate.

All chrome fixtures are polished. Shower, tub, and tile are restored as close to like-new condition as we can get them.

You've either never seen your bathroom this clean, or if you have, it's probably been a while.

Living Areas and Bedrooms

Freshly deep cleaned living room in a Greater Houston home
More indications it is time for a thorough deep cleaning from Sunrise Maids.

For your common living areas and bedrooms, we don't skimp on what really needs to be addressed: the corners and areas that are hard to see.

Couch cushions are removed, vacuumed underneath, fluffed, and replaced. Furniture is dusted, wiped, and polished. If your couch sits high enough, we will vacuum under there as well.

All light fixtures, lamps, picture frames, and more are dusted and considered when performing a deep clean. We do not forget about dusting your blinds and getting whatever bugs, hair, or dust has settled on your window sills.

Baseboards are dusted, and light switches are wiped. Carpets are thoroughly vacuumed, and any hard flooring is mopped, sometimes multiple times depending on the level of grime, until they shine with the life that is left in them.

We can't promise your home will look brand new again, but we can promise we will get it as close as we can.

Additional Detail Work and Add-Ons

If our 49-Point Checklist doesn't check off every box you have in mind, we offer additional add-ons to give you the ultimate deep cleaning experience.

Did your au gratin potatoes boil over the sides of your casserole dish and get burnt cheese on the inside of your oven? We can take care of that with our interior oven cleaning add-on.

Does your refrigerator still have a certain smell even after throwing out all of your leftovers and expired food? Just tack on a refrigerator interior cleaning and we will take everything out and systematically clean every shelf and every surface to get it smelling fresh again.

Even though we do dust baseboards as part of our checklist, sometimes the dirt is so caked on that we actually need to get down there with a wet rag and wipe or scrub your baseboards to get them looking fabulous again.

We can also detail the exterior of your cabinets, clean your interior windows, wash your dishes, or even fold your laundry if you need a couple of extra helping hands. Just let us know and we can get your home back to perfect condition in a few hours.

We schedule our teams so that no deep cleaning goes over 4 hours. This keeps things intimate and personal, and we try to get out of your way as quickly as possible, only leaving shimmering surfaces and clean scents in our wake.

How Our Deep Cleaning Process Works

So you've decided your home needs a deep cleaning. What happens next?

Booking and Preparing for Your Deep Clean

Booking a deep cleaning online with Sunrise Maids
Pick a date and time that works. No pre-cleaning required.

Once you've decided you're ready for a full reset, select a range of dates and times that work best for you. We typically have the date and time you need, but during peak days we can get booked up, so we recommend having a backup date or time to fall back on just in case.

There's not much you need to do to prepare. You don't need to pre-clean for the cleaners. Just make sure we can access the areas that need attention. If there are rooms or surfaces you want us to focus on or avoid, let us know when you book and we'll make a note for the team.

What to Expect on Cleaning Day

Sunrise Maids cleaning team performing a deep clean
We work top to bottom, every room, every time.

Our team arrives with everything except the residence. You can leave us a code, leave a key, or let us in yourself. Either way, we get right to work.

First, we spray down all wet areas like showers, tubs, toilets, and sinks with our cleaning solutions and let them go to work while we move on to other tasks. No time wasted.

Then we start at the top and work our way down. Dust settles. It doesn't make sense to mop your floors and then knock dust down onto them from the ceiling fans. We work top to bottom, every time, in every room.

From there, we systematically work through our 49-Point Checklist to ensure every item is covered and your home is company-worthy by the time we're finished.

Once we're done, we either lock up or say goodbye and let you enjoy your clean home.

After Your Cleaning

Our office staff will follow up by text message shortly after your cleaning to make sure everything was to your satisfaction. That's our 100% Clean Guarantee in action. If something wasn't right, we want to know.

We'll also ask if you'd be willing to leave us a review. We know that's a big ask, but those reviews are how families like yours find us in the first place.

At the end of the day, we're just hoping that by the time you're ready to relax with your loved ones, the stress of a home that wasn't up to your personal standards is a thing of the past.

Deep Cleaning Pricing

Professional deep cleaning results: a spotless Houston kitchen
Honest pricing based on your home's size and condition.

How much does deep cleaning cost in Houston? It depends on who you ask.

One company is charging one price and another feels like you're getting a quote for a completely different service. And you typically are. Every company has a different definition of what they consider a "deep cleaning." Some companies refer to any one-time cleaning as a deep clean. Sunrise Maids doesn't work that way. We have separate service tiers so we can price more accurately for your specific situation rather than lumping everything into one catch-all category.

Our deep cleaning pricing starts just under $250 for a small apartment and can reach well over $1,000 for some of the larger homes we service across the Greater Houston area. That's a wide range, and there are real reasons for it.

What Affects the Price of a Deep Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning price factors, we use a pretty standard system: time. There's that theme again.

More square footage means more time. More bedrooms, bathrooms, and half bathrooms means we need to account for how long all of it will take. For each room or bathroom added, you've just increased the number of nooks, crannies, and areas for dirt, dust, and grime to get trapped and live there until a professional team like Sunrise Maids can come in with military precision and conduct a full evacuation of anything that does not belong in your home.

The current condition of the home matters just as much as the size. A 2,500 sqft home that's been lightly maintained is a very different job than a 2,500 sqft home that hasn't been touched in a year. We price based on what we're actually walking into, which is why we ask you to be honest with us about the condition when you book.

If you need any of our add-on services like interior oven cleaning, refrigerator interior, or detailed baseboard scrubbing, those get factored into the total as well.

The good news is there's a remedy for keeping costs down long term: recurring service. Once you've made the financial and emotional investment into getting your home back to a place you're happy with, we would love to take over routine cleanings for you. Even a monthly visit qualifies for a discount on our services.

You wouldn't wait a year to go to the dentist because of the long-term effects it could have on your health. Your home is very similar when it comes to your mental health. Investing in a routine cleaning service you can count on is peace of mind you never knew you could have.

When in Doubt, Go with the Deep Clean

If you're on the fence between a standard cleaning and a deep cleaning, our honest recommendation is to go with the deep clean. The worst case is that you're ecstatic about the results. The worst case of going the other direction is disappointment, and neither one of us wants that.

We would much rather over-deliver than leave you wishing you had gone one level up. A standard clean on a home that really needed a deep clean means our team runs out of hours before they run out of things to clean. You end up with a home that looks better but not great, and we end up unable to stand behind our 100% Clean Guarantee because we weren't set up to succeed.

This is exactly why we built our Start Here tool. It walks you through a few quick questions about your home's size, condition, and what you're looking for so that we can align on expectations before anyone picks up a mop. Managing expectations from the very first conversation is how we make sure you're happy and we're proud of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing varies based on home size, condition, as well as add-ons or move-related. The biggest drivers are bathrooms, heavy buildup, and time-consuming add-ons like inside ovens, inside fridges, and interior windows. For an accurate price, define the scope (what’s included) and list any add-ons up front.

Our cleanings typically last between 3-4 hours, as we schedule the proper number of cleaners to keep it within this time-frame. Total man-hours depends on square footage, bathrooms, condition, and add-ons such as inside ovens/fridges or interior windows. To avoid surprises, please be up front about the condition of your home before booking.

Deep cleaning targets buildup and detail work beyond routine upkeep. It typically includes more thorough bathroom and kitchen detailing, extra attention to dust buildup, and expanded detail on surfaces like where you can see visible dirt and grime. Because “deep clean” can vary, our checklist matters most—confirm exactly which detail items are included.

Regular cleaning is maintenance—keeping a home consistently tidy and clean. Deep cleaning is a detail-focused reset that targets buildup and areas that don’t get attention every visit. If it’s been a while since the last professional clean, deep cleaning is usually the better starting point.

Deep cleaning is typically scheduled periodically to reset buildup that routine cleaning doesn’t fully address. Frequency depends on traffic, pets, cooking, allergies, and how consistently routine cleaning is maintained. Many households use deep cleaning seasonally or before big events, then rely on maintenance visits in between.

Deep cleaning is often worth it when you want a noticeable reset rather than basic upkeep. It’s most useful before hosting, after a busy season, when buildup has accumulated, or when starting recurring service. If your goal is “fresh and detailed,” deep cleaning is usually the right first step.

Yes, we offer other add-ons for time-intensive areas. Common add-ons include inside oven, inside refrigerator, interior windows, exterior cabinets, and detailed baseboards. Because add-ons change the time and price, list them before the visit so the scope and schedule match.
